Nancy S. Steinhardt

Professor of East Asian Art
Nancy S. Steinhardt is Professor of East Asian Art in the Department of East Asian Languages and Civilizations and Curator of Chinese Art at the Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology. She has taught at Penn since 1982, previously having taught at Bryn Mawr College and University of Delaware. She was a visiting professor in the Kunsthistorische Institut, University of Heidelberg, in 1996. Steinhardt received her PhD in Fine Arts at Harvard in 1981 and was a Junior Fellow in the Harvard Society of Fellows from 1978-81. She received her A.B. summa cum laude from Washington University in 1974.
 
Much of Professor Steinhardt's research has focused on East Asian architecture and urban planning; but her broader research interests include problems that result from the interaction between Chinese art and that of peoples at China's borders, particularly to China's North, Northeast, and Northwest. She is author of Chinese Traditional Architecture (1984), Chinese Imperial City Planning (1990), and Liao Architecture (1997); editor and adaptor of A History of Chinese Architecture (2002), co-editor of Hawaii Reader in Traditional Chinese Culture (2005), and has written more than 60 scholarly articles and more than 30 book reviews. She has given more than 120 public lectures or conference talks.
 
Steinhardt has received fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation, National Endowment for the Humanities, American Council of Learned Societies, American Philosophical Society, Graham Foundation for Advanced Study in the Fine Arts, Social Science Research Foundation, and Chiang Ching-kuo Foundation. She is a member of 12 professional organizations.
 
Current projects: Steinhardt is part of a ten-member international team, supported by the Getty Foundation, engaged in research and digital reconstruction of the Xiangtangshan caves and art of the Northern Qi (550-577). She is also advisor and catalogue contributor to the exhibition, "Liao: China's Nomadic Dynasty," that will open at Asia Society, New York, in fall 2006. Steinhardt is editing "Chinese Architecture and the Beaux-Arts," a book based on the Penn conference in fall 2003. In addition, she is involved in research projects on Chinese architecture of the 3rd-6th and 13th -14th centuries; and temple and tomb wall painting of the 13th and 14th centuries. In the fall, Steinhardt is teaching Art and Civilization in East Asia and a seminar on Chinese Architecture.
